Stackhouse's 67 Paces Field in Opening Senior Summer Series Event
May 18, 2009
By Jeff Ranck

Benton, Pa – Mill Race Golf Club’s Carl Stackhouse played a bogey free round and carded three birdies enroute to a three under par 67 here today and captured the opening event on the expanded NCPGA Senior Summer Series. Playing on his home course and on his birthday, the 53 year old outdistanced his nearest rival, Bucknell Golf Club’s Tim Harpster, by four shots. Harpster carded a one over par 71 while Williamsport Country Club’s John Cattoni and Bucknell’s Jeff Ranck tied for third at 74.

After making par on the first four holes, Stackhouse chipped in for birdie on the long par four fifth hole. He then added birdies at the par three fifteenth and at the par four fourteenth before making a fifteen foot par saving putt on the final hole.

Stackhouse, who captured the overall senior title in 2008, finished atop the age 50-59 year old age bracket. In the 60-69 year old age bracket, Lost Creek’s Al Kline, Sr. posted a 75 to nip a trio of players at 76. Bucknell Golf Club’s Gary Fry, Susquehanna Valley Country Club’s Dr. John Pagana and Toftree’s Tom Daley all tied for second in that age group.

Bucknell Golf Club’s Bob Bucher shot 83 to pace the 70-79 year old age group. He was five shots ahead of second place Dick Beck, also of the Bucknell Golf Club. In the 80 and older age division, Bucknell Golf Club’s Boyd Mertz posted a 78. He was five shots better than Lost Creek’s Dick Roush who shot 83.

Merchandise prizes in the Mill Race Pro Shop were awarded to both the top gross and net finishers in each division. The players enjoyed a light luncheon after play.

The Summer Senior Tournament Series started last year with three events and a season ending championship. Its popularity caused the NCPGA Board of Directors to expand the series to five events and a season ending championship. Points are awarded to the top ten finishers in each division for each event. At the conclusion of the five tournament series, the top for point getters in each age group will get invited to compete in the season ending championship to be played in September at the Susquehanna Valley Country Club.

The next tournament on the summer series will be June 8th at the Clinton Country Club in Lock Haven. Golfers over the age of 50 can register online at http://ncpga.ghinclub.com.
